Free Squamish workshops on how to seal gaps and cracks in your home

Did you know the tiny gaps and cracks in an average home can cause 20 to 30 per cent of heat loss, and contribute to higher energy bills?

This is why simple air sealing work, like using weather stripping around doors and windows or filling cracks with caulk or foam, can make a huge difference to your home’s energy use and comfort.

Squamish residents have the chance to learn how to identify gaps in their home’s building envelope and the best ways to seal them before winter arrives, thanks to a series of free educational workshops this summer.

Participants will also have the chance to apply for a free home energy-efficiency test and in-home air sealing work by an Energy Advisor from Sitka Home Energy Solutions.

The first workshops were held in July, when attendees learnt about basic building science concepts and had the opportunity to explore different air sealing materials and the best ways to apply them.

The workshops will be held again in early August

The free workshops and air sealing work are part of District of Squamish’s goal to decarbonize existing buildings, one of Squamish’s Six Big Moves to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030. The District of Squamish received funding for this initiative from Fortis BC’s Community Programming fund.

Continue the journey with Retrofit Assist

Squamish residents can also access one-to-one guidance on other energy-efficiency upgrades across their home through the District’s partnership with the not-for-profit Retrofit Assist program.

“There are over 8,000 private dwellings in Squamish. Most were built before energy efficiency was first introduced into the BC Building Code in 2008, so simple steps like air sealing or adding insulation could make a big difference across the community,” said Mariah Byers, Retrofit Assist Program Manager.

“A lot of people find it hard to know where to start, especially when it comes to accessing the many rebate programs for energy efficiency work.

“We provide impartial, personalized guidance on energy upgrades such as improving the building envelope with vapour barrier or insulation, replacing a furnace with an electric heat pump system, or replacing doors and windows.

“We can also connect residents to local authorized contractors, review their quotes to ensure rebate compliance and assist with rebate applications.”

Guidance is provided for free, although residents need to pay the cost of any building work that is not covered by rebates.

Discounted EnerGuide evaluations for Squamish and other Retrofit Assist communities

Each participant needs to complete an EnerGuide Evaluation by an Energy Advisor, who will measure how much energy your home is using, and provides suggestions on how to make it more efficient.

For a limited time, EnerGuide Evaluations for Retrofit Assist participants are now just $99 plus tax – a saving of at least $500!
