Advancing Kamloops's Climate Goals

The City of Kamloops is committed to transitioning to a low-carbon future. Supporting home energy upgrades is just one of the ways the City is taking action to address climate change and make our community more climate resilient. Learn more about these strategies in the Community Climate Action Plan.
Why a retrofit program?
Buildings account for 29% of greenhouse gas emissions in Kamloops, making them the second largest source after transportation. As such, a key strategy in the City’s Community Climate Action Plan is to help homeowners reduce their household emissions by making building envelope, insulation, and heating system improvements.
In addition to reducing emissions, energy efficiency retrofits can reduce energy bills and make homes healthier with better ventilation and thermal comfort levels. According to a 2023 Homebuyer Preference Study by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, home energy efficiency is among the top 5 “must have” features for Canadians in the market to buy a home. You can read case studies of Kamloops residents who are already enjoying the benefits of home efficiency improvements, here.
Past City home energy retrofit initiatives include the Renovate Smart and Climate Friendly Homes programs, the Green Living Expo, booths at the Fall and Spring Home Shows, and the popular ‘See the Heat’ program delivered in partnership with the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library.
The Retrofit Assist program is the latest and most comprehensive City initiative to support home energy retrofit activity in our community. The City presently offers rebate top-ups for Kamloops households that install a heat pump, an EV charger, or remove/upgrade eligible fireplace appliances.
