Whistler is making existing buildings better.
Whistler showed early leadership on climate as one of the first signatories to the BC Climate Action Charter, then implementing many significant actions such as landfill gas flaring, in-vessel composting, green building policies, and improved transit. In 2016, the municipality developed the Community Energy and Climate Action Plan (CECAP) and, more recently, developed the Climate Action Big Moves Strategy. This strategy focuses on transportation, buildings, and waste, and articulates the key strategies Whistler will need to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet its target to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
While reducing emissions from existing buildings is especially challenging, Whistler is committed to pursuing a wide range of initiatives to facilitate investments in building energy efficiency. In 2022, Whistler partnered with Squamish to launch the first Retrofit Assist program in BC.
