What types of upgrades are eligible for support through Retrofit Assist?

The Retrofit Assist team is here to support you with all home energy upgrades, including:

  • Energy efficient heating and cooling systems
  • Energy efficient domestic hot water systems
  • Ventilation
  • Windows and doors
  • Insulation
  • Air sealing
  • Solar panels

Are there any rebates offered through the Retrofit Assist program?

For a limited time while funding lasts, Retrofit Assist is subsidizing the cost of EnerGuide Evaluations for participants – just $99 +tax for the pre-retrofit Evaluation.

There are no rebates available through the Retrofit Assist program retrofit projects. However, participating communities may offer their own set of rebates in addition to what’s offered through federal and provincial rebate programs. Through Retrofit Assist, we can help you navigate these rebate programs, including highlighting what’s available, what upgrades are eligible, and what requirements must be met in order to qualify.

See Community Specific FAQs and Rebate FAQs for more information about existing rebate programs.

How long does the retrofit process take?

The Retrofit Assist team recognizes that undertaking home energy retrofits can be a huge decision. There’s no rush! We’re here to guide you at whatever pace you’re comfortable with.

Depending on the type(s) of upgrade(s) you are pursuing, the retrofit journey can take anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. The process is especially prolonged in areas that experience heavy snow as this typically slows down or halts any work during the winter months. This means that contractors are extra busy in the summer months, and sometimes homeowners have a hard time coordinating a job quickly. Additionally, some participants experience delays in starting their retrofit journey due to some rebate and financing program requirements. The Retrofit Assist team will do our best to help you complete your retrofit journey in a timely fashion.

Can I get quotes from contractors outside of the program?

Yes – you can engage and hire any contractors you would like to complete your home energy upgrades.

The Retrofit Assist team connects participants to program contractors in their region, ensuring these contractors meet the various rebate and financing program requirements. Retrofit Assist has established relationships with program contractors, often streamlining the communication process when clarification and support is needed. However, you can certainly get quotes from any other contractors. By using a Retrofit Assist contractor, our team has set certain expectations in terms of communication and quality that contractors have agreed to meet, making the quoting and installation process smoother for everyone.

Am I able to participate in Retrofit Assist even if I don’t live in my house year-round and/or rent it out?

Yes – Retrofit Assist is open to all renters and homeowners, regardless of whether the home is your primary or secondary residence, however, you may not be able to access all rebates. See the Rebates FAQs for more information.

How do I know if I have successfully registered for Retrofit Assist?

Once your application has been successfully received, you will receive an email asking you to schedule an Onboarding Call with the Retrofit Assist team.

If you do not receive this email, please check your emails junk folder. If you are still not seeing the email, please email info@retrofitassist.ca and we can check if your application was received.

I am having difficulty registering (my application will not submit and/or Captcha is not working), what should I do?

We’re sorry for this inconvenience. Please try applying again after a few minutes. If you continue to have difficulties, please email info@retrofitassist.ca or call 236-576-2502.

Does Retrofit Assist offer support for new builds?

No – Retrofit Assist only supports retrofits to existing buildings. For information on Step Code and new build incentives, speak to your local government.

How quickly can I get the rebates?

Clean BC (BC Better Homes) has several rebates available depending on your home energy retrofits. The rebates can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to receive depending on what you decide to do and what you are eligible for.

Canada Greener Homes can take several months before you receive your rebate. It is best to complete each step of the process as efficiently as possible to reduce the time between completing your retrofits and receiving your rebate.

Who funds Retrofit Assist?

Retrofit Assist is a program of the Community Energy Association. Funding for the program has come from several sources including BC Hydro, the Real Estate Foundation of BC, Columbia Basin Trust, FortisBC, and the communities where we operate.

What is the process of the Retrofit Assist program?

What climate zone do I live in?

Eligibility for some programs depends on the climate zone your home is in (in other words, how cold the climate is for your home). This can affect participation in the CleanBC Energy Savings Program (previously CleanBC’s Income Qualified Program) and anyone looking for a dual fuel heat pump. Homes located in climate zones 5, 6, 7 or 8 (excluding Vancouver Island) are eligible to retain a fossil fuel backup furnace and install a dual fuel ducted heat pump. All other heat pump types require the removal of the fossil fuel heating system, if applicable. Learn more about the Energy Savings Program.

Retrofit Assist communities are in the following climate zones:

  • East Kootenay: 6/7
  • Kamloops: 5
  • Rossland: 6
  • Whistler: 6
  • Squamish: 4

Note: limited availability on a first come, first served basis.

Does the Resort Municipality of Whistler have additional rebates available?

There are $250 top-ups available to help cover the cost of your pre-EnerGuide evaluation, and $125 top-ups available to support your post-EnerGuide evaluation, funded through the Resort Municipality of Whistler. These top ups will automatically be applied to your EnerGuide evaluation invoice when using a Retrofit Assist energy advisor.

Note: limited availability on a first come, first served basis.

What is the Canada Greener Homes Loan

The Canada Greener Homes Loan was a financing option that is no longer available. You can talk to Retrofit Assist to see if there are other financing options available for you.

What rebates are available?

There are a variety of rebates available through the Province of BC and utilities. Please email us at info@retrofitassist.ca to receive our Retrofit Assist Rebate Guide for your community.

What upgrades are eligible for rebates and/or financing?

Retrofit Assist participants can always access the experienced and knowledgeable guidance of our team who will show you which grants match your retrofit goals.

See below for links to active grant and loan programs.

How quickly can I receive rebates and access financing for my retrofit project?

The CleanBC Better Homes and Home Renovation Program and Energy Savings Program administer rebates as individual upgrades are completed. You must submit invoices within 6 months of each upgrade being completed. The rebates are typically processed within 90 business days.

Because most rebates and grants are only issued once work is complete, homeowners must have a way to pay for work at the outset.

Am I able to access rebates even if I don’t live in my house year-round and/or rent it out?

The CleanBC Better Homes and Home Renovation Rebate Program and the CleanBC Energy Savings Program both stipulate that eligible homes must be a year-round primary residence. The home can be occupied by the homeowner or a tenant. Read CleanBC home eligibility requirements.

What qualifies as a primary residence?

To access financing through the Canada Greener Homes Program, the homeowner must demonstrate the property is their primary residence by:

  • proving ownership by providing a property tax bill number during their application (this number can be found on municipal property tax documents).
  • proving the property is their primary residence with a valid piece of government-issued ID with the matching address, such as a driver’s license.

To access rebates through the two CleanBC Better Homes rebate programs:

  • The home must be a year-round primary residence that is at least 12 months old.

The homeowner or tenant must have a residential utility account with FortisBC, BC Hydro or a municipal utility.

I’m eligible for the Energy Conservation Assistance Program (ECAP) and they’re performing an energy evaluation as part of the program. Do I still need to complete an EnerGuide evaluation?

If you are a part of the ECAP or Home Energy Savings Program (HESP), Retrofit Assist does not require you to complete an EnerGuide evaluation. However, it is still beneficial, as the ECAP energy evaluation is different than an EnerGuide evaluation.

During the ECAP energy evaluation, the advisor will install free measures (i.e., lighting, water efficient aerators and shower heads) during their visit and assess for other free upgrades (insulation, heating systems, etc.).  This evaluation focuses more on how the homeowner/resident uses energy in their home and how they can reduce their usage day to day.

The EnerGuide evaluation takes an in-depth look at your home, providing you with a full report on your home’s energy efficiency. The report includes a list of recommended upgrades and includes how your home’s consumption and air leakage will change with said retrofits.

Read more about the ECAP program.

Can I access rebates and financing for work that I’ve completed myself?

In some cases, yes. In others, no. Contractor requirements vary across programs.

CleanBC Better Homes

  • All projects must be completed by a licensed contractor with a BC business license.
  • Insulation and heat pumps must be installed by a contractor who is part of the Home Performance Contractor Network.

Canada Greener Homes Loan Initiative

  • Mechanical systems must be installed by a licensed and trained professional (e.g., heat pumps).
  • Other projects can be completed by you (e.g., insulation, windows, and doors)

It’s also important to note that if you are completing projects on your own, each program has requirements regarding eligible equipment (i.e., specific windows, doors, and mechanical systems that you can install).

Are homeowners eligible to access rebates if they’ve purchased the product themselves (heat pump, insulation, etc.) but had it installed by a contractor?

Participants are eligible to access rebates for equipment they have purchased. However, some contractors will not install products that they have not ordered themselves as they cannot warranty it and sometimes do not support the brands of products ordered. It is best to check with your contractor first before making any purchases.

Don’t forget – the equipment must meet the program requirements and be on the Qualified Product List.

Ensure to keep ALL invoices to access financing and rebates.

What qualifies as a permanent foundation for my mobile home?

Through the CleanBC program: Foundations accepted for mobile homes are full concrete, wood post or piling and concrete/brick post or piling. They must have their own utility connection and account and be connected to sewer and water (including well and septic systems).

Through the Canada Greener Homes program: A permanent foundation is an assembly that transfers loads from the building to the supporting soil or rock and renders the building immovable. A permanent foundation also includes blocks. They cannot be on a trailer or have wheels.
