What is a home energy retrofit?

Home energy retrofits enhance energy efficiency while providing a more comfortable and climate-friendly home. Retrofits can involve:

  • Improving the building envelope (windows, walls, roof) through air sealing, enhanced insulation and more efficient windows and doors

  • Updating your home heating, cooling, ventilation and hot water systems with more efficient equipment, such as heat pumps

  • Installing energy savings measures such as programmable thermostats and upgrading appliances and lighting

The Process

Step 1: APPLY – Register for the program online or onsite at a community event – simple and free. We’ll be hosting two intakes (December 2022 and June 2023) for up to 50 homeowners.

Step 2: DIG DEEPER - Have a follow up conversation to highlight your needs and priorities, understand next steps and financing options available.

Step 3: UNDERSTAND YOUR ENERGY USE – Learn about how your home uses energy through an EnerGuide evaluation $650, much of which you’ll get back through rebates.

Step 4: MAKE A PLAN – We’ll help you sort out a plan based on your priorities, home energy use, budget and timelines

Step 5: GET THE WORK DONE - We’ll connect you with skilled contractors to support your project and then help you get a post-retrofit evaluation and maximize the loans and rebates available.

Step 6: ENJOY – Sit back and relax in your more comfortable and climate-friendly home

Discovering your energy baseline

The role of an Energy Advisor

Energy Advisors (EAs) help you make good decisions - they are knowledgeable efficiency and sustainability professionals trained to help homeowners, renovators, and builders to view the house as a system and enhance a home’s energy efficiency.

They are registered by Natural Resources Canada to deliver the EnerGuide Rating System and will use diagnostic (e.g., blower-door air leakage test) and modelling tools to provide impartial, third-part y verification and ratings of a home’s energy efficiency.

EAs create a renovation upgrade report to identify areas that require attention and explore additional opportunities with homeowners to create a roadmap towards a healthier, more sustainable and efficient home.

Contractors, we would love to work with you

Why a retrofit program?

The City of Rossland started addressing climate change in 2008 with the Visions to Actions Strategic Sustainability Plan and in 2020, committed to the West Kootenay 100% Renewable Energy Plan. This will help create a pathway to 100% renewable energy for transportation, buildings, electricity and local infrastructure no later than 2050. One of the strategies in the plan is to improve existing buildings with a program to educate and incentivize homeowners to make building envelope, insulation and heating system improvements.

How is this different from the Rossland Energy Diet?

The Rossland Energy Diet in 2012 was a similar approach and had fantastic uptake, but there have been lots of advances over the last decade in knowledge, materials and technology (like LEDs and heat pumps) to support homes in becoming even more efficient and climate-friendly.
