When Kathy and David built their timber frame home 20 years ago, they were driven to choose the greenest technologies available at the time. In part, that meant a whole wall of south-facing windows for passive heat, and a natural gas boiler.
Two decades later, facing much hotter, smokier summers, things needed to change. “We built ourselves a solar hot box for the summer!” said Kathy. “We desperately needed cooling.”
They decided to switch to a heat pump powered by solar panels on their roof and garage. With an air tight home, low-e windows, and lots of insulation, they could jump straight into these projects. With big rebates available from the Province of BC and Government of Canada, Kathy and David could save on utility costs while making good on what really matters to them: “to be as green as possible and reduce our carbon footprint” said Kathy.
With guidance from Retrofit Assist, they found local contractors at good prices, planned the logistics, and sorted out all of the complexities of receiving rebates. Learn more about Kathy and David’s retrofit journey by reading this case study.
